The UK government has added 11 more destinations to its public warning roster regarding the dangers of industrial alcohol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.
The updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Only last month, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to a number of serious events such as the fatal demise of six travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hours.
Industrial alcohol is a toxic substance often employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for human consumption.
While it is naturally produced during the creation of spirits, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the purification method.
Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to identify.
Authorities representative the minister said that all travellers should be aware of the symptoms of industrial alcohol toxicity.
"While having drinks abroad, stick to well-known venues and avoid homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the minister advised.
"In case something seems unusual, like a headache that's way worse than typical or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."
The complete list of destinations listed as carrying a threat of methanol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
