Fresh hostilities broke out along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border early on Wednesday, with each side blaming the other of initiating lethal confrontations.
Pakistan's military stated that its troops had eliminated "15-20 Afghan Taliban" and wounded numerous others in the Spin Boldak frontier area.
A Taliban government spokesman claimed that twelve Afghan civilians had been killed and over a hundred wounded by Pakistani firing. He further stated that several military personnel had been killed. None of the reported fatalities could be independently confirmed.
Violence between the neighbouring countries has flared since blasts rocked Afghanistan last week, which Kabul blamed on Pakistan. The Taliban deny allegations that it is sheltering armed groups aiming at Pakistan.
The opposing forces are not only battling for the upper hand on the frontier, but also on digital platforms, attempting to persuade the general population that their side is causing more damage.
The most recent fighting come after intense cross-border confrontations over the weekend, when the Taliban claimed to have eliminated 58 members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Pakistan said it neutralized 200 "Taliban and affiliated insurgents". The reported death tolls announced by both parties could not be independently verified.
Several days of unstable calm that had lasted since the recent days were shattered on Wednesday.
Footage allegedly of the fighting and its aftereffects have been circulated on the internet and on messaging groups, including footage claiming to be of those killed and grainy shots from low-light cameras claiming to be of guard positions destroyed. These recordings have not been authenticated.
A source in the border area in Afghanistan stated that fighting broke out at around 04:00 local time (23:30 GMT on the previous day). Another local in the district, who lives about one kilometre away from the border crossing, reported that "intense hostilities continued for almost several hours".
"I see drones and fighter planes soaring over us, a number of our family members are injured," they added.
A medical professional in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak stated that he tallied "7 bodies and 36 injured transported to the medical center", including males, women and minors.
The circumstances were "tense" and additional casualties were being taken to hospital, he said.
A local authority figure in Spin Boldak stated that "numerous of households have been forced to flee since the previous evening due to the heavy fighting". He mentioned they were on "maximum readiness" after a several Taliban posts were attacked by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the remains of two armed forces members.
In a separate night-time clash on the western frontier, the Pakistani military claimed that 25 to 30 Taliban and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "suspected" to have been killed.
The clashes have prompted calls for de-escalation from foreign nations including Beijing and Russia, as well as a suggestion from the American leader that he could step in to facilitate peace.
On that day, a UN official, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by accounts of civilian casualties and evacuations because of the fighting.
"I urge everyone involved to practice maximum restraint, protect civilians, and abide by international law," he wrote.
Pakistan has for years accused the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistani militants to operate from their territory and battle against the Pakistani administration in an effort to enforce a strict religion-based system of governance.
The Taliban leadership has always denied these allegations.
