Sports Champions Urge on Iran to Prevent Execution of Champion Boxer

Over 20 Olympic medal winners, coaches and other international athletes have put their names to a letter urging a stop to the capital punishment of a champion boxer and trainer, who is on death row in the country.

Escalating Global Anger

Amid increasing global condemnation over the nation's expanding employment of the death penalty as a means of oppression, the powerfully expressed appeal condemns the authorities's ruling to uphold the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, three decades old, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was arrested for participating in countrywide demonstrations in the year 2019 and accused of supporting an dissident organization. He has endured five years in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and confined in solitary confinement.

“Athletics is meant to promote faith, solidarity, and courage,” the endorsers wrote. “The execution of a winner for his political views is a blatant attack on these principles and a caution to any competitor who dares to express dissent.

Record of Executing Athletes

The appeal pointed out that the boxer's situation was part of a pattern and highlighted the country's record of putting to death sports champions for their views, for example a national team leader, captain of the football side, and a women's sports leader, captain of the women's volleyball squad. In 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year national competitor, was also executed.

Additional endorsers to the letter include Tracy Edwards, who captained the first women's squad in a global yacht race and was the first woman to be awarded a renowned yachting trophy; the former leader of the national squad Craig Foster; and a footballer, who was in the country's selection for the global tournament.

Arrest and Unjust Proceedings

The athlete was arrested in early 2020. The allegations against him entailed “causing deterioration on Earth through incendiarism and ruin of public property”. His verdict has been reversed multiple times but on October 4 it was confirmed on the latest review. His court case was denounced as “deeply biased” by advocates and organizations.

Appeal to UN

The call to halt the boxer's death sentence comes after a 2023 appeal to the United Nations official for human rights, backed by more than 100 rights specialists and groups, urging intervention to avert the athlete’s execution.

Death Penalty Surge

As per findings, there is an “execution crisis in the nation, which has achieved horrific levels”. In 2023, officials put to death at least 853 people – a 48% increase on 2022. In the prior period, statistics showed nine hundred seventy-two capital punishments, representing the highest number since 2015. Over 800 people have been put to death so far in the current year.

Dissidents and opponents are targets, particularly in the aftermath of the 2022's demonstrations. Analysts say the government have employed the capital punishment to suppress opposition, create fear among the population and reinforce their hold on authority.
