This appeared to have sealed a crucial three points for West Ham in their battle against relegation. The Seagulls, stirred by the conceded goal, pushed for an equaliser, going close when Maximilian Kilman almost turned the ball into his own net.
As late goals are habitual at the Amex Stadium, the home supporters kept a glimmer of hope. This faith was justified in during closing stages. In a chaotic penalty area melee, van Hecke displayed composure to pass the ball into the area, where Georginio Rutter was on hand to thunder it home. The equaliser triggered wild celebrations among the Brighton contingent, while it dealt a crushing setback to West Ham's survival bid.
The result does little to alleviate the drop zone fears surrounding West Ham, who stay deeply involved in the battle at the foot of the Premier League. Meanwhile for Brighton, it is another example of their resilient spirit, but also underscores the erratic performances that continue preventing their season.
