A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other platform users also profited significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on the start of the week would prevent public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.

Prediction markets were examined under the last presidential term. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
